New Media Analysis

How does the newspaper's website compare with its paper version?

The difference between the website version of the newspaper and the paper version is that there is less advertisement online because it can be constantly updated through out the day and there are links that lead to the advertisements website therefore there is no need for advertisements to take up large amounts of room. Also because the website can be updated through out the day the stories can be updated unlike with the paper version which only provides so many stories and cannot be updated so by time you get the newspaper it could be classed as old news.

How does the website make use of:

Digital technology- By using the internet the website can be updated constantly throughout the day so that the reader is always getting up to date news as the readers are more demanding now than 50 years ago. Search engines allow the reader to search for the stories they want rather than searching through loads of topics to find what they want like with newspaper. Also it makes the newspaper more interactive because its online.

Convergence - The website uses convergence because it is more interacive and it has moving images. Also there is the use of advertisements with links to websites as well as the use of video's where you can leave messages.

Interactive Features - The Sun's website has interactive features such as search engines, advertisements with links to websites.

New Forms of Advertising - Because the website is interactive it makes it better for advertisers, because the advertisement leads straight to the website so the reader can look at the advertisement properly.

User Generated Content - The website remembers what type of stories the user generally reads and remembers it so that reader gets the stories they want quicker. We also have Suntalk where readers can leave comments.

New Sources of Revenue - Because The Sun is now online the advertisement is now online so advertisers will be paying for there adverts to be on the website but they wont be paying as much because they can advertise on social working sites such as facebook for cheaper.

What information/statistics can you discover about how successful the website is in attracting readers/hits?

A daily statistic for viewing the website is 1,229,518 which gives the website an average monthly viewing of 21,248,552 for the month of march in 2009. This shows us that the website is being a huge success.

Is your newspaper distributed to mobile phones? What can you find out about this service?

The Sun is distributed on mobiles phones and features monophonic and polyphonic ringtones aswell java games and page 3 wallpapers and screensavers. There is also a mobile platform that enables content providers to market, sell and deliver there products and services to users on all mobile networks.

Advertising Analysis

As you can see in this first advert they are trying to put across the point that there is something for everyone. Firstly we have the couple which shows there is something for both females and males. Then we see an old man walk over and see the story about Hero's this reflects the newspapers point that it is something for everyone as it even attacts older generations.

As we can see in this second advert we see communities coming together as we have the builders and the business people and then we have different nationallities and ages coming together and all playing together. I think this advert is more aimed at men as we have the beautiful women dropping footballs which will automatically attract men because its sports and women.

Content Analysis

The front page

On the front page of The Sun we have the masthead which is bright red and with bold white writing. Also next to the masthead there is a display advert for a free loaf of bread which attract the lower class readers because it is food which they use everyday.

We only have one main story on our front page and it has the headline of "White Van Man can land two grand by canning van" We then hav e a simple 17 lines which lures the reader in. This story is then contuinued on pages 6 & 7. Because there is no more other stories we have pictures that lure the reader in to buy the newspaper. For example there is a picture of Susan Boyle with the sub headline "BET SU LOOK GOOD ON THE DANCEFLOOR" this then lures the reader in to read page 5. Then to attract our male readers we have a lure on the football "The gr8est game since... last week!"

It focuses on a main story and pushes the celebrity and football stories to the side this allows to show a more serious matter first but still lures the reader in so that they buy the newspaper.
